Music as Medicine

Deeply rooted in our blood and bones is the primal instinct to sing.

Traditional cultures all over the world share this tool for connection to the unseen world.

For many of us, this instinct has been persecuted into hiding, and singing has become a source of fear, shame and anxiety. Dominant voices of criticism, and the violence of colonial capitalist culture has cut us off from the intuitive joy of singing our heart songs. My people of long, long ago used to sing their prayers into the star-filled night sky, worshipping our lives on earth as Sacred through spontaneous song.

I am actively reclaiming this gift as I heal a lineage cycling from abused to abuser, that shut my voice down for a long long time, and I yearn to share this journey with those who seek support on theirs. My voice has taken years of gentle, curious exploration to come back to me, and embodying its healing magic is a key piece in the fabric of my well-being.
Perhaps you feel yourself in this story and are looking for some one-on-one support in connecting into your heart’s song?

What can a Music as Medicine Session look like?

For the first step of these sessions we will focus on safely exploring your story around your voice, holding you in whatever is true for you. Offering a supportive, safe space for you to be heard in how you internalized messages from your upbringing, your felt sense around your possible ancestral lineage wounds, and/or just generally what you feel contributed to you feeling disconnected from your voice.

Once you feel heard, understood and witnessed in the “why” and “how” of your voice’s closure we will begin to play with innocence through intuitive toning, singing melodies that come from your very own heart. Unfabricated, spontaneous, raw and personal expression of sound. I will support your process through the medicine drum, gentle prompts, my own voice if/when invited, and the steady comfort of space holding.

From here, we can explore learning a mantra from the Sanskrit tradition, chanelling a personal medicine song for you, or co-writing a personalized mantra in english to serve as connection to a medicine melody to add to your support tools on the path.

These sessions are guided entirely by our shared intuition, allowing your voice and expression to exercise its power, re-connecting to your heart song. These are in no way technical vocal coaching. I have no experience in the world of training the voice to sound “good”. Rather, we will focus on letting the heart reveal itself through sound. These are healing work sessions, accessing deep caverns of our souls through song.

All my Relations : a medicine song of mine

A Snipet of My Voice Story:

I first re-claimed my voice in ceremony with Ayahuasca on my first journey to the Amazon, at the ripe age of eighteen. As a socially anxious, totally disembodied, vocally trepidatious, nervous teenager, it seemed no short of a miracle that all of a sudden I was belting out a medicine song in a language unknown to me in the dark nigh of a jungle maloka. Since then, I have been retracing the steps of disconnect, coming home to my voice and the musical gifts of my ancestors.

I have supported in many a ceremony since then, learning as I go, the healing art of music as medicine. In my most recent journey to the Amazon I worked with a beautiful medicine called Bobinsana (featured in the image here) and came even loser home to the magic of my heart song.

Along the way I have studied Sanskrit and the healing power of mantra, learning how sound can protect the mind and guide the energy of our lives.
I draw on all this medicine to bring you these Music as Medicine Sessions.

My prayer is to uplift and inspire others on the path of embodying our voices and the medicine that singing from the heart brings not just to ourselves, but to the health of our communities. I pray for the time when we all sing together once again, learning to be people together.
